Paddling against Pollution

Ernie's journey began at Rincón near of his town Aguadilla.

Oceans are becoming more polluted while years pass by, that's why several organizations got together to avoid this. An outstanding never seen before journey starts right here in Puerto Rico to support this campaign.

RINCON -  Plastic Free Ocean is an organization that helps the environment against pollution of excessive use of plastic and its breakdown in the oceans. In 2009 there was an organized campaign where its founder Tom Jones paddled the entire East Coast of the United States from Key West to New York, and helped clean it, funding for the organization and spreading a message on how plastics affect the life on earth to every living being in the planet. This 2010, the campaign continues, and on its second edition it promises to keep up with the same purpose than last year: "A plastic free ocean".

This year supporting the event, the 47 year old Boricua surfer originally from Aguadilla (Northwestern side of Puerto Rico) Ernie Alvarez, joins the cause and promises to accomplish the same feat by achieving the exact same purpose of Tom Jones in the United States but in the entire Puerto Rico.

Tom Jones (Plastic Free Ocean founder) had the amazing challenge of taking a non-stop, record-breaking run across America for 120 days, while paddling across the East Coast. Ernie, who might have stopped several days to rest, promises to keep up with this astonishing work and get back to it to end it this June 5th.

Ernie Alvarez is one of the forces of paddle boarding in the Caribbean and East Coast who was invited to the second edition of this battle of the paddle. The athlete started on May 16, the same day Tom Jones started in Key West and it will be an outstanding performance when he begins paddling across the Puerto Rican coasts, starting with the beaches of Rincón (Northwestern side of Puerto Rico going down from Aguadilla).

With only his paddling board Alvarez is planning to finish the journey exactly at the same place it begins, to reach an amazing total of 300 miles, always with the thought to share an incredibly educational message in favor of the environment's conservation.

Alvarez spoke to the official Plastic Free Ocean website and added: "As soon as I learned about Tom's heroic efforts to bring awareness about this serious environmental emergency, I immediately decided to join him by putting in a few hundred extra miles for the cause. For my part, I will paddle around the entire Puerto Rico island chain. I put myself as another example for other regions of the world to emulate to do their part to save our oceans and planet, mile after mile".

The surfer has his team in Puerto Rico with Camile Splain and Arkboids regional manager; and he's sure this event will make every Puerto Rican think and consider that not only human beings are affected with this matter but also our precious wildlife under the ocean and its surroundings.
